Short Term Discussion

Hello skiers and snowboarders,

For today through at least Monday, we expect perfect spring skiing conditions. Cool in the morning, then sunny and mild for the afternoon. A strong ridge of high pressure will be in place at the surface and aloft through Monday, so lots of sun to enjoy your spring-like conditions.

The first map shows the snowpack as a percent of normal and most of the ski areas are close to 70% of normal. That is great news, especially given some of the dire predictions at the start of the season. Also, several weeks ago, many of the snow numbers were much lower. The map below does not indicate the snow on the ground as a percent of normal but the snow water equivalent as a percent of normal. This measures the water content of the snow and is used by water management agencies. However, this is also a good measure of how our ski resorts did for this season.

The second map is a classic Omega Block. Resembling the Greek letter omega Ω the Omega Block is a strong ridge of high pressure that can block areas of low pressure and the associated precipitation from our region. This pattern tends to stay in place for extended periods.

Check out the extended outlook below.

Extended Outlook

Wednesday, March 20 we begin to have some cooling which will continue into Sunday, March 24. This is indicated by the graph below for Stampede Pass at 4000' and just east of Snoqualmie Pass.

The second map shows snowfall on Saturday, March 23, so it looks like some spring powder is coming. Of course, this is in the extended forecast, so please be sure to check out our next update on Sunday, March 17.
