Hello skiers,
Winter is not over. There is significant Cascade powder potential next week, with abundant snowfall and low snow levels. Pencil this one in on your calendar, details to come. In the meantime, we will be brushed by a couple of storms, providing a dusting to a few inches of snow.
The computer models show a respectable Cascade storm with a lot of new snow; more than a foot for sure. Two feet, maybe? Plus, ending with a 2,000 ft snow level - quality late season bonus powder! Yowza thats the kind of forecast that has a nice ring to it.
But remember this time of year, even with a low snow level the suns energy gets through the heavy cloud cover and can make the snow heavy in short order. Youll want to get on it early and favor the north facing slopes for best conditions. Ill have more details (and more confidence) regarding the snowfall amounts, timing and snow levels for next weeks powder fest soon. Watch for it on this Sundays powder alert update.
Here the forecast:
Friday Partial clearing -- as weak storm brushes the Cascades, but no snow until after the lifts close
Saturday Cloudy in the morning, dusting to 1 from overnight, partial clearing after lunch
Sunday Clouds thicken during the day, chance of snow late. Snow increasing overnight
Powder Alert: Monday / Tuesday
New snow Monday morning (4-9) with more snowfall during the day. Then more snow overnight into Tuesday with increasing quality as the snow level drops. Right now, I like both Monday and Tuesday, but I slightly favor Tuesday with the lowering snow level and possible convergence zone (high snowfall rates). New snowfall potential (48 hrs: 10-25)
Again, Ill have an update Sunday
.
Field report: Whistler / Blackcomb, BC
Skied W/B this week and it was good, especially Tuesday with the sun and Thursday with softer snow. The snow coverage remains excellent and you can ski top to the bottom, but a bit mushy at the end of the day the bottom 1000 vertical. There is no snow in the Village. The upper slopes are in great shape, with the best skiing off the Glacier/Crystal chairs (Blackcomb) and Symphony bowl (Whistler). Off-piste is difficult and not recommend until new snow falls. Off-piste has some avalanche debris and is firm with a shallow layer of fresh on top. Patchy dense fog/flat light was an occasional problem (as per usual), but cleared up fast. Groomers had some firm spots especially in the morning, but also soft (cold snow, higher elevations). Overall, they did an outstanding job grooming. There is good snow coverage and it will easily last into April, but remember they start closing some lifts in mid to late April. The long days are a real bonus with better visibility.
W/B will greatly benefit from several storms in the next week. I expect 15-20, the bulk of that new snowfall total will occur Sunday-Tuesday.
